Glossary

Landfill is a physical area of land where municipal waste is deposited, buried and stored forever.

Material Recycling Facility (MRF) is a facility where waste, recyclables and compost material is sorted to limit waste going to landfill and maximizing recycling and composting opportunities.

Waste Diversion is the process of diverting recyclable and compostable material from the waste stream to limit the amount of waste going to landfill and maximizing recycling and composting opportunities.

Baler – A machine that crushes cardboard boxes, plastics, and other material into a densified bale ready for recycling.

Vertical Baler – A baling machine where the compaction platten moves vertically to compress the material inside the bale chamber.  Vertical balers use very little floor space and are popular in grocery stores, manufacturing facilities, distribution centers, hotels, hospitals, apartment complexes, restaurants, and gathering places – or any location generating high volumes of material

Horizontal Baler – A baling machine where the compaction platten moves horizontally to compress the material inside the bale chamber.  Horizontal balers are capable of being fed via a conveyor, cart tipper, or manually on a continuous feed basis.  Many horizontal balers also have an auto-tie feature making the entire bale process automatic.

  • Closed Door Horoizontla Balers
  • Two Ram Horizontal Balers

Compactor – A machine that crushes material to reduce the material’s volume and maximize efficiency by reducing frequency of pick up.

Trash Compactors are used to compact trash to reduce the frequency of pick ups by a garbage truck, thus reducing volume going to landfill and reducing the trash bill.

Recycling Compactors densify recyclable materials to simplify loading of the material and reduce frequency of pick up by the recycler.

Compost Compactors compress compostable material to reduce frequency of pick up.

Indoor Compactors are compactors that are placed indoors in a kitchen, closet, or indoor trash area.  Indoor compactors reduce trips to the outside garbage area by staff, improve back door security and can limit employee pilferage

Corral Compactors replace the trash, recycling, or compost bins in the trash area to reduce volume and frequency of pick up.

Roll-off Compactors compress material into a large capacity receiver.  The Roll-off reciever is then picked up by a Roll-off truck and taken to the MRF and dumped, then returned to the Roll-off compactor site.

Self-contained Compactor is a Roll-off compactor where the compaction head and the receiver are one unit.  When the compactor is full the hauler will use a roll-off truck to pick up the entire unit and take to the MRF to dump, then return the entire unit.  Self contained compactors limit liquid leakage and simplify operations.

Stationary Compactor is a Roll-off compactor where the compaction head is fixed to the ground and just the compacted receiver is picked up by a roll-off truck and taken to the MRF to be dumped.  Once emptied the reciever is returned to the Stationary compactor and secured.

Compaction Ratio is the amount of compaction delivered by a compactor or a baler.  For instance a 6:1 compaction ratio will reduce the volume of trash 6 times, or put another way, the compactor will compact 12 loose yards of material into a 2 yard container.

Compaction Rate is the amount charged by a garbage hauler to haul compacted material.

Smart Trash or Intelligent Waste monitoring systems monitor the real time fullness and functionality of a compactor or baler and can communicate automatically via cellular or hard wired phone lines.

Solar Compactors are compactors or balers that use solar power to charge a battery to operate the equipment.  Solar compactors can be street or public area compactors (Big Belly™, eCube™, PEL™) or solar compactors and balers can be fitted to larger systems as well.

Dehydrator is a machine that processes food waste and compostable material to extract liquid  reducing volume up to 20:1

Liquid Food Composter or Bio Digester processes food waste and compostables via enzymes and liquid injection breaking down the material and sending material out with wastewater.

Thermophilic Aerobic Digestion systems use mechanical and biological processes to transform organic waste into high-value soil products.

Wheelie Bin – A heavy duty plastic waste/recycling/compost receptacle.  Toter™ can.

Trash Bin – A heavy duty Steel or Plastic receptacle where one places material for pick up by the waste hauler or recycler.

Public Area Receptacle is a collection devise where the public disposes of trash/recyclables/compost – often placed on a sidewalk or in a public gathering area or in logical places indoors to maximize collection.

Waste Caddy™ - is a small machine used for towing bins and compactors.

Cart Tipper is used to mechanically dump material into a compactor, baler or bin eliminating physical lifting.
